Both the North and South had advantages, and disadvantages during the civil war. Since the North's economy was based around industry, the Union had a lot more factories and people making weapons and preparing supplies for the soldiers. The North also had 70% of the the railroad in the U.S. while the south only had 30%. Another advantage that the North had was the telegraph. The telegraph gave the Union a way to communicate quickly over long distances. The Union also had more soldiers. The North had a much larger population than the south so more people joined the army.
Along with the North, the South had some advantages too. The North had a much larger population than the South, but the South was a lot bigger in size. Since the South was so large the North had to invade all of that territory while the South could just defend. Because of the South's side they also had a very long coastline that would be tough for the North to control. The Confederacy also had something that the Union didn't, military leadership. The North didn't have very good leaders of their military while the South had very strong officers. The final thing that the Confederate army had was a very strong will to fight. They were fighting for their whole way of life so they put everything they had into the war.
